Starting college is exciting—but it can also feel overwhelming. That’s why Howard Community College offers the Step UP program, where you’re matched with a dedicated faculty or staff coach who’s with you every step of the way.

Step UP has helped students for more than 20 years by offering weekly one-on-one meetings focused on you. There’s no set agenda—just honest conversations, helpful guidance, and someone who truly listens. Coaches can also connect you to important campus resources.

Step UP Info for Students

Students who are taking at least one course during the semester they receive coaching are eligible to participate in Step UP.

Why Join Step UP?

Every student can benefit from having a Step UP coach—no matter where they are in their academic journey. Your coach is a dedicated guide, supporter, and listener who meets with you one-on-one throughout the semester to help you stay on track and thrive.

You set the focus—whether it’s academics, work-life balance, personal goals, or campus resources—and your coach is there to offer encouragement, guidance, and a judgment-free space to talk.

Step UP students often see real results, including higher GPAs and stronger semester-to-semester enrollment compared to students who don’t participate.
Your Role in Step UP
Being part of Step UP means showing up for yourself. As a student in the program, you’ll commit to:
- Meeting with your coach once a week during the semester
- Communicating if you can’t make a meeting
- Staying engaged and following through on the goals you set together

Step UP Info for Coaches

Step UP coaches are full-time or part-time faculty and staff who want to make a meaningful impact—one student at a time.

Why Coach a Step UP Student?

As a coach, you serve as a guide, advocate, and supporter, helping your student balance college and successfully navigate their experience at HCC.

In return, coaching offers personal and professional growth: you'll strengthen transferable communication and mentoring skills, build connections across campus, and contribute to a culture of support. For full-time faculty, participation can also be included in your annual MAP goals.
Your Role as a Step UP Coach
Step UP coaches play a key role in supporting student success. As a coach, you’ll:
- Complete the one-time Step UP Coach Training.
- Participate in professional development sessions to strengthen your coaching skills.
- Meet with your assigned Step UP student once a week during the semester.*
*Participation is on a semester-by-semester basis.
