- Make professional development a priority. Challenge your employees to sharpen their existing skills and/or broaden their base of skills and knowledge by offering ongoing opportunities for training and continuous education. TDS can help you identify these opportunities based on your goals and strategic direction. - Make their value known on day one, through a solid orientation program. Take the time to orient and train new hires, without rushing through the process. This will go a long way in assuring new folks are equipped with the right knowledge to do their jobs and integrate into your organizational culture. In tandem, it will send them a message, immediately, that you value them.
- Launch a buddy system. We all need someone we can turn to on the good days and the tough days, to share successes, problem solve on the fly, or simply to vent to. Pair people up thoughtfully and strategically rather than assuming they will identify someone to be “their person” on their own.
- Stress the importance of work / life balance … and mean it. Be clear with your team that you appreciate their dedication to their work, but that work is just one part of life. They can and should turn it off to enjoy families, hobbies, personal passions, and down time. And make sure you and the rest of your leadership team is practicing what it preaches.
- Hold team building activities, on work time. Weave some fun into the workday. Your employees will appreciate the reprieve from their work environment, and team building activities create opportunities for people to get to know one another in new and personal ways.
- Promote personal health. Create opportunities for people to make their personal health and wellness a priority, both during and outside of work time. Consider implementing health potluck luncheons, morning walks, and friendly and fun health challenges that will engage people and encourage them to strive to be their best, both personally and professionally.
- Celebrate the things that matter. Honor employees on their work anniversaries. Let them leave the office a few hours early on their birthdays. Create an awards system to recognize the people who go above and beyond at work, or who have unique personal talents outside of work that they want to share with their team. Simple opportunities exist every day to do the unexpected. And when you do, your team will appreciate you more than you expect.
