Maryland Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller saluted more than 600 Howard Community College graduates as the keynote orator for the 53rd HCC commencement exercises.
It was Miller’s first commencement speech at a community college since being sworn in as the state’s 10th lieutenant governor and the first immigrant elected to statewide office in January 2023. Miller’s address was the second delivered to HCC graduates from the state’s highest leadership offices in two years, as Governor Wes Moore delivered the 2023 commencement keynote.
Rev. Dr. Robert Turner, Pastor of St John Baptist Church, and Cathy Bell, a noted Columbia-based entrepreneur and philanthropist received honorary degrees at this year’s exercises.
Prior to her election as lieutenant governor, Miller distinguished herself as a member of the Maryland House of Delegates, where she worked with her constituents to create legislation to invest in STEM education, streamline the regulatory process for small businesses, and champion working families, survivors of domestic abuse, and the environment.
