Diagnostic Medical Cardiac Sonographer Certification

The  Adult Echocardiography II course objectives align with the National Education Curriculum for Sonography (NEC) provided by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRCDMS). 

Course Objectives
At the end of this course, students will be able to:

Identify:

• The challenges in imaging prosthetic and bio-prosthetic valves.

Describe:

• Echocardiographic criteria used for evaluating tumors.
• Echocardiographic findings associated with altered electrical activation, Valvular Heart Disease (VHD), cardiac involvement in systemic disease, and various types of congenital heart disease.
• Common surgical repairs seen in the adult patient.
• The purpose of stress echocardiography.
• The purpose and protocol of Transesophageal echocardiography
• Clinical indications and contraindications for the use of contrast
• Clinical setting and application of advanced techniques/procedures

Discuss:

• The clinical signs and symptoms associated with congenital heart disease.
• The echocardiographic features associated with various cardiomyopathies.

Explain:

• The pathophysiology and hemodynamics of cardiac tamponade and constrictive pericarditis.
• How the segmental approach is utilized to identify and characterize congenital heart disease.

Understand:

• The complications associated with myocardial infarction.
• The relationship between ventricular wall segments and coronary artery distribution.
• The difference between the indications of exercise versus pharmacologic stress echocardiography.
• The clinical indications for 3D/4D echocardiography.
• The parameters used in qualitative and quantitative assessment of valvular heart disease.
• The correlation between ventricular wall segments and coronary artery distribution.

Application Requirements

• HCC's Diagnostic Medical Sonographer Certification courses are open to Sonographers, or students who are currently enrolled in a DMS Program, who desire to learn a new modality and/or who are working towards becoming credentialed.
