Teaching Across Cultures: Education and Culture in Ecuador

This study abroad program offers HCC students the opportunity to explore Ecuador's rich culture, natural beauty, and educational system while earning college credit. In partnership with Universidad de Cuenca, students begin with a tour of Quito before heading to Cuenca—a UNESCO World Heritage city known for its colonial charm and vibrant cultural scene. Participants will study Spanish and engage in classroom observations during school visits as they gain insight into Ecuador's education system. Evening activities include local cuisine, music, and festivals. After the 10-day trip, students complete online coursework for credit in EDUC-110.

Credit Information

EDUC-110 Intro to Education (3 Credits) OR EDUC -220 Field Experience in Education (3 Credits) OR ANTH -120 Comparative World Cultures (3 Credits)

SABR-200 “Study Abroad” (1 Credit) for new travelers OR SABR-201 “Study Abroad” (1 Credit) for returning participants

You will wait to take these courses until summer 2026!

**You are required to meet with your academic advisor prior to the November 14th, 2025 deadline to ensure that the coursework fits your academic plan of study. This is associated with any scholarship funding awarded.

Program Cost
The tentative cost for the study abroad program is $3,400. This fee does not include the additional three credit course fee or the one credit study abroad course fee. All fees are paid in the Cashier's Office in RCF 2nd Floor. The payment timeline is as follows:
- $300 Program Deposit Fee due by November 14, 2025
- $1,550 Initial payment due by January 9, 2026
- $1,550 Final Payment due by February 9, 2026
*HCC reserves the right to increase the cost of the program up to 10% due to increased costs/flights and/or currency fluctuations.

The Program Cost Includes:
- Roundtrip airfare
- Transportation within country
- Some meals
- Accommodation
- All planned excursions
The Program Cost Does Not Include:
- Some meals
- Free time expenses
- Health preparations
- Passport/Visa fees
