Language and Culture of Taiwan
Travel to Kaohsiung for an exciting four-week program on the language and cultures of Taiwan. The program will be hosted by National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU) in the southern coastal city of Kaohsiung. The NSYSU campus is modern and in a beautiful location between coastal mountains and a beach, all in one of Taiwan's largest cities and less than two hours by bullet train from Taipei. Participants will prepare for the study abroad experience with an overview of Taiwanese history and culture prior to departure. At NSYSU, participants will take Chinese language classes each morning and engage in cultural activities and excursions in the afternoons and on the weekends. Excursions will include visits to sites in and around Kaohiung such as the Pier 2 Art Center, Ruifeng Night Market, Lianchitan Scenic Area, Fo Gong Shan Buddha Museum, and the Qihou Lighthouse and Qihou Battery on Qijin Island. Outside of Kaohsiung, participants will visit sites in Taipei and Taichung and thus spend time in the largest cities in northern, central, and southern Taiwan. No prior Chinese language study is required. Participants will be placed in courses that suit their needs, from beginner to intermediate to advanced. Participants from HCC will be part of a program with students from other institutions in the United States and around the world. Upon successful completion of the program, participants will earn credit at HCC for HUMN 223, Cultures of Asia, and receive a language certificate from NSYSU.
The application deadline for all study abroad programs is November 14th, 2025. If you applied, please make sure to check your HCC email for any updates.
