Natural Sciences
Welcome to the Natural Sciences department at Howard Community College, where the mysteries of the universe and the wonders of our planet converge in a dynamic and interdisciplinary environment. Our department is a hub of exploration, discovery, and sustainability, housing four distinct fields of study: Astronomy, Environmental Science, Geology, and Horticulture. Our course options provide students with the flexibility to explore a variety of fields while fulfilling general education requirements.
Astronomy: Our Astronomy courses provide a gateway to the cosmos, where students embark on an astronomical journey to explore the vastness of space. Students in the astronomy courses gain a deep understanding of the universe through our state-of-the-art telescope observation deck and cutting-edge research opportunities.
Environmental Science: The Environmental Science program focuses on understanding and addressing the critical environmental challenges of our time. Students engage in thoughtful discussions and laboratory experiments to investigate issues such as climate change, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable resource management.
Geology: Geology is the foundation of Earth sciences, and our Geology courses focus on studying the planet's physical processes and history. Students delve into the Earth's structure, surface processes, and geological history, and our environmental geology course combines environmental science and natural resource issues in a meaningful way.
Horticulture: The Horticulture program brings a touch of nature to our department, focusing on the science of plant cultivation and landscape design.
Our dedicated and passionate faculty members are not only experts in their respective fields but also mentors who nurture your intellectual curiosity and encourage you to explore the intersections between Earth and space sciences. The Natural Sciences department provides an exciting and comprehensive educational experience for those who seek to understand and protect our planet and the universe beyond. These courses include a combination of lectures, labs, study abroad opportunities, service learning, and research experiences.
The Natural Science department is equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories, telescopes, and a greenhouse, fostering a vibrant and collaborative learning environment. Whether students are gazing at distant galaxies through a telescope, conducting fieldwork in diverse ecosystems, analyzing rock formations, or cultivating beautiful gardens, they are continually inspired to explore the wonders of Earth and the cosmos. This multidisciplinary approach prepares our graduates to address complex global challenges, whether they choose careers in research, education, environmental advocacy, or industry.
We invite you to join us in exploring the depths of space, the intricacies of our planet, and the beauty of nature as we work together to shape a more sustainable and enlightened future.
