About Us
Our Mission
We empower students through service, collaboration, and reflection, partnering with faculty and staff to offer place-based experiences that support academic and personal goals. Our programs provide opportunities for meaningful contributions to the valuable work of our community partners.
Our Vision
To foster empathy, compassion, belonging, and active citizenship by immersing students in environments that challenge them to understand the relevance of their learning in the greater world.
What We Do
The Center for Civic and Community Engagement provides a variety of opportunities for students to get involved in volunteer service in and outside the classroom. Each year, approximately 1,000 student community-engaged placements are completed in collaboration with more than 55 partnering non-profit, educational, and government organizations. Students involved in the community-engaged learning program work to provide food to individuals experiencing food insecurity, conserve environmental resources, improve the health and wellness of Maryland residents, and so much more!
Students can get involved by taking an HCC course that offers a community-engaged component or participating in one of the Center's co-curricular programs like Alternative Breaks. Find out more on the students page.
Faculty members can work with the Center to design and implement an academic integration or travel as an advisor on an Alternative Break Trip. Find out more on the faculty/staff page.
Community organizations can host student volunteers by becoming an official partnering organization. Find out more on the partnering organizations page.
