Funding Pathways - Fall 2017

Summer officially started at Howard Community College (HCC) with the college’s Commencement on May 25. Hundreds of students were able to walk across the stage because of the financial support they received from scholarships provided by donors like you. Sarah, who was this year’s student speaker, is one of them. Like many of our graduates, she is a first generation American who found a home at Howard Community College.

Just a few days later, on May 30, the new Science, Engineering, and Technology (SET) Building opened its doors for summer classes. This exciting opening provides a new home for our students to learn and discover, as they prepare to join the workforce of the future – a workforce that is hungry for STEM professionals.

We celebrated this new building with a ribbon cutting ceremony on August 21, and will culminate our celebration with a black-tie event, the President’s Gala, presented by BGE, on December 2. I hope you will join us as a sponsor or guest for an evening of dining and dancing!

Larry Twele, Howard County Economic Development Authority

As the CEO of the Howard County Economic Development Authority (HCEDA), Larry Twele is often touting the area’s highly educated workforce. “It is why companies choose to locate here,” he said. “Talent makes a company successful and if that talent is here in the county, companies want to have access to it. We want to make sure Howard County remains competitive.”

Carl Strobel, FiberPlus, Inc.

Over the years, Carl Strobel has enjoyed numerous letters from Howard Community College students who have benefitted from the scholarship he provides. “It’s typical to hear that they are the first in their family to go to college,” he said. “It’s nice helping students who want to strive.”

Sarah, HCC Graduate

The first in her family to navigate the American education system, recent graduate Sarah found a home at Howard Community College. She moved to the United States from Pakistan at age nine, and excelled as a student in high school and again in college. In May, she graduated as a proud member of HCC’s Rouse Scholars honors program, with a 4.0 grade point average, and was chosen as the Commencement ceremony’s student speaker.
