61.25 Emeritus
Howard Community College (HCC) has established the Professor Emeritus status to recognize retiring or retired faculty members who have made outstanding contributions to the quality of instruction, growth of the college, the community, and their disciplines.
Criteria
The following criteria will be used as the basis for recommendation to Professor Emeritus rank for retiring faculty:
- The faculty member has earned the rank of professor at HCC.
- The faculty member has served a minimum of twenty years at HCC and a minimum of ten years as a member of the full-time faculty of HCC.
- The faculty member is recognized by peers and supervisors as having made an outstanding contribution to the quality of instruction at HCC.
- The faculty member is recognized as having contributed significantly to the quality and growth of HCC.
- The faculty member has made substantial contributions to the community, profession, or discipline of the faculty member.
Procedures
- A person retiring from HCC who has served in a faculty role or as an academic dean completes a request for Emeritus status no later than 365 days after the faculty member’s date of retirement.
- Deans consider the request and recommend individuals for the rank of Professor Emeritus to the vice president of teaching and learning.
- The vice president of teaching and learning carries recommended nominations to the faculty forum constituency committee for consideration.
- The faculty forum constituency committee makes a recommendation on nominations to the vice president of teaching and learning.
- The vice president of teaching and learning considers each nomination and supporting materials. If the vice president supports a nomination, the vice president forwards the nomination to the president.
- If the president supports the nomination, the nomination is forwarded to the board of trustees for consideration. The board of trustees bestows the rank of Professor Emeritus.
The title of Professor Emeritus may be awarded posthumously.
Privileges
A faculty member approved as Professor Emeritus by the board of trustees has the privileges listed below in addition to the privileges afforded to all retirees. The president approves Professor Emeritus privileges upon request.
- Continued faculty listing in the catalog with rank of Professor Emeritus.
- Tuition waiver for any credit and noncredit courses.
- Standing invitation to participate in institutional functions, such as commencement, dedications, etc.
- Faculty rates for institutionally sponsored events such as plays, film series, and trips.
The board of trustees retains the authority to withdraw a Professor Emeritus title at its discretion, as it deems necessary and appropriate.
