
Howard Community College Board of Trustees Announces Officers and Meetings for Fiscal Year 2024
COLUMBIA, MD –The Howard Community College (HCC) Board of Trustees has elected its officers and scheduled the meetings for the fiscal year 2024.
Board of Trustees Officers
The board of trustees elected Sean Keller as chair and Dr. Shafeeq Ahmed as vice chair for the fiscal year 2024.
Keller was appointed to the board for a six-year term through June 2025. He will serve as chair of the board's audit and finance committee for the fiscal year. Keller is a Consultant with Peloton Strategies Group, where he works with small and mid-sized organizations to develop and implement strategies to enhance organizational value through innovative and creative approaches to traditional business challenges. He is a retired U.S. Air Force Reserve Intelligence Officer. Keller formerly served on the board of directors for the Howard Community College Educational Foundation and the Howard Community College Commission on the Future.
Ahmed was appointed to the board for a six-year term through June 2028. He will serve as vice chair of the board of trustees and chair of the board's legislative and community relations committee for the fiscal year. Ahmed is the president of Johns Hopkins Howard Medical Center. He was named to his position in July 2021 after serving in an interim capacity since November 2020. Prior to that, he was the hospital's chief medical officer/vice president of medical affairs for five years.

The board of trustees has set the dates below for its regular meetings and committee meetings during the fiscal year 2024. All changes or additions to these meetings will be announced on the news page of Howard Community College's website, located at: www.howardcc.edu/news.
The board of trustees of HCC is authorized by the Maryland Open Meetings Act, Title 3 of the General Provisions Article § 3-305 (b), to conduct certain portions of its meetings in closed session. Therefore, the board will conduct a portion of its August 23, 2023, December 13, 2023, and May 22, 2024, meetings in closed session at the beginning or conclusion of the regular meeting or retreat "to discuss the appointment, employment, assignment, promotion, discipline, demotion, compensation, removal, resignation, or performance evaluation of an appointee, employee, or official over whom it has jurisdiction." These meetings shall continue in closed session until the completion of business.

A member of the public who wishes to present any matter of concern pertaining to the board must submit a written request to the secretary/treasurer of the board at least 72 hours prior to the regularly scheduled public meeting for review and response. In emergency situations, the board may, by a majority vote, give visitors who have not presented a written request in advance an opportunity to present their concerns to the board in any regular public meeting. The board, in recognition of the need to complete its business within a reasonable time, may limit the presentation to three minutes.
