Howard Community College Receives Donation from Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation
Howard Community College’s Educational Foundation (HCCEF) has received $3,000 from Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation to help feed neighbors in their time of need. HCCEF will use the gift to purchase fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, eggs, and dairy to keep its pantry stocked.
“We would like to thank the Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation in supporting our pantry to provide HCC students access to free healthy food,” said Anne Johnson, Director of Resource Development for the HCCEF. “When students are hungry and feeling stressed, they can experience lightheadedness, fatigue, irritability, and lack focus and concentration. These side effects impact students' learning ability, making it challenging to complete their educational goals. Working together, we can continue to help students and provide lifelong skills that lead to healthier lives by learning how to feed their minds and bodies through proper nutrition and food preparation.”
HCC provides pathways to success by removing barriers such as food insecurity. The Fueling Dragons program encompasses a number of initiatives designed to meet the dual goals of providing immediate support for students who are facing hunger or food insecurity; and working to build sustainable nutrition, food sourcing, and preparation skills through educational experiences and workshops. The program includes the campus food pantry, the campus garden, nutrition and health education, cooking classes, and meal kits.
The Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation is committed to supporting families facing food insecurity across its 10-state footprint. Established in 2001, the foundation provides financial support for programs and organizations dedicated to feeding local neighbors in the communities it serves. Since its inception, the foundation has awarded more than $17.8 million in grants.
