Horowitz Center Galleries Announce Fall 2023 Exhibitions
COLUMBIA, MD – The Horowitz Center galleries at Howard Community College (HCC) present two exhibitions this fall. “Warp & Weft,” curated by Maryland Art Place (MAP), features fiber work by women in the Richard B. Talkin Family Gallery from August 28 through November 19, 2023. “Nuestra Herencia,” an exhibit celebrating Hispanic Heritage, will run in The Rouse Company Foundation Gallery from September 15 through October 29, 2023.
Curated by Maryland Art Place (MAP), “Warp & Weft” highlights female artists working in fiber. Women and their relationship to fiber have long been intertwined throughout history. The female role has increased tenfold over the past five decades to encompass domestic, emotional, and financial responsibilities. Taking a contemporary approach to age-old techniques, the exhibition will include everything from felting, embroidery, stitching and weaving. “It has been a true pleasure to collaborate with MAP on ‘Warp & Weft.’ They brought outstanding artwork to Howard Community College from some of Maryland’s most talented fiber artists. ‘Warp & Weft’ takes fiber art in unexpected directions and is sure to inspire our HCC community,” said Bill Watson, gallery manager and curator. “Warp & Weft” includes artwork by Jennifer McBrien, Karin Birch, Pamela Thompson, Bonnie Crawford, Sasha Baskin, Katie O’Keefe and Christine Wolfe Strong.
“Warp and Weft” will be available for viewing to the public August 28 – November 19, in the Richard B. Talkin Family Art Gallery with a reception scheduled for Thursday, October 26 from 5-7 p.m.
Maryland Art Place (MAP) inspires, supports, and encourages artistic expression through innovative programming, exhibitions, and educational opportunities while recognizing the powerful impact art can have on the community. More information may be found at www.mdartplace.org.
The Rouse Company Foundation Gallery presents “Nuestra Herencia,” a group exhibition presented in partnership with HCC’s Ambiciones program and the new HCC Social Justice and Equity Center. “Nuestra Herencia” translates to “Our Heritage,” and is encompassing the diversity, inherent traditions, and emotional expression of the Latinx artists in various mediums. The exhibition is an opportunity for invited artists of Hispanic and Latinx descent to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month by exploring their journey through artistic reflection, demonstrating a range of ages and experiences through the work of HCC faculty, staff, students, and alumni. Each unique artwork reflects an introspective journey derived from their cultural duality, struggles and accomplishments.
One goal of “Nuestra Herencia” is to expose the idea of visual arts as a career for the Hispanic/Latinx community at HCC. Participating student Deb Araujo is excited for the opportunity to display her work, "This exhibition is important to me because, as a child, I never saw art created by people who looked like me, shared my heritage, or had similar experiences. I remember watching shows but seeing little representation. This had a significant impact on me during my formative years and I thought I could never become an artist, poet, or photographer when I grew up. Being invited to this event and seeing people of all backgrounds recognized and acknowledged brings joy to my heart and inner child."
“Nuestra Herencia” can be viewed in The Rouse Company Foundation Gallery September 15 - October 29. A student panel is scheduled for Thursday, September 28, at 5 p.m. in Monteabaro Recital Hall, followed by a reception from 6-8 p.m.
An additional reception celebrating the work in both galleries is scheduled for Thursday, September 21, 5-7 p.m. in collaboration with the Howard County Arts Council’s Road to the Arts weekend, which encourages patrons to discover and explore Howard County’s diverse visual arts spaces.
The galleries are open daily 9 a.m. – 9:30 p.m. during exhibition dates and are closed on holidays when the college is closed. Entry is free and open to the public. For more information, visit www.howardcc.edu/galleries.
