HCC Celebrates Juneteenth
.png)
Juneteenth National Freedom Day celebrates the end of slavery in the United States, marking June 19, 1865, when the news of the Emancipation Proclamation finally reached slaves in Galveston Texas, more than two years after it was signed. This day came to be known as Juneteenth, now officially a federal holiday.
Juneteenth is a time to celebrate, reflect on the past, and look to the future. Please join us, along with our partners, at the Howard County Center of African American Culture for an inspirational Juneteenth program in HCC’s Smith Theatre on Sunday, June 18 at 7 p.m. The evening features performances by Savoy McIlwain, Duane Moody, and Everette Williams in a concert of spirituals, arts songs, and opera. This program is FREE and open to the public.
Thank you to the event co-sponsors: the Office of the Howard County Executive, North American Division of Seventh Day Adventists, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Thank you to the Howard County Office of Human Rights and Equity, Boy Scouts of America Troop 2016, and Howard County NAACP for their support.
Howard Community College will be closed in observance of the Juneteenth National Freedom Day holiday on Monday, June 19, 2023.
