Dr. Willis Reflects on Her First Year as HCC’s President
From LEGOs in her office, to visiting student dance rehearsals, Dr. Daria J. Willis is paving an exciting new future for college presidents, “I want students to see me for who I am.”
Baltimore Sun reporter, Ethan Ehrenhaft, spoke with Dr. Willis, president of Howard Community College (HCC), about her first year as HCC’s president. Before sitting down to have a conversation, they visited the HCC Dance Company Concert rehearsal where Dr. Willis learned a few moves from the students.
Dr. Willis enjoys connecting with students in everything from taking jump shots at basketball games, to interviewing community members on Instagram Live. “I want students to see that there’s a new way that a president can be and you don’t have to fit this bubble,” she said. “I can get suited and booted with the best of them when it’s time to do that, but on campus, I want students to see me for who I am.”
Dr. Willis went on to speak about The Kahlert Foundation Complex, currently under construction, which will house mathematics and athletics. She also addressed the expansion on the college’s wellness center, equitable access, the Fueling Dragons program and more.
